I don’t know if there’s anyone left out there reading this but I really miss beauty blogging and what I get from it personally. Makeup is such a passion for me and documenting that is something I enjoy spending my time on. My biggest problem is that I am a huge procrastinator and a bit of a slacker even when it comes to things I enjoy.
I have to do some “spring” cleaning of my makeup stash so I figured I’d swatch and review as things are on their way out.
I also have some new goodies and some not-so-new goodies I’d like to swatch and review. I feel like some of them have been well documented at this point but I still think it’s worth it considering everyone has different skin tones, tastes and opinions.
My one other obstacle is my camera. I am low on funds and putting some stuff on ebay in hopes of getting a better camera with a good macro mode so I can start doing fotds and more face swatches. I haven’t worn makeup in a long time so I will be a beginner all over again and documeting my practice and growth is something I’d like to do for my own satosfaction.
If it helps/entertains anyone else along the way, then awesome. I hope to talk to you all soon!
L’Oreal Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base, that is.
Thank you to LeGothique for the review or I may never have picked it up!
As far as I’m concerned, I have the perfect primer for use underneath liquid makeup and to prolong the wear of my foundation. That primer is Make Up For Ever HD color correcting primer in Neutral. Until recently I was using it underneath my mineral foundations as well and while it’s fine for that, I was suffering from large-pore woe and it wasn’t quite covering me in that department.
I tried samples of Urban Decay’s Pore perfecting primer and Too Faced Primed and Poreless. I also have a sample of Benefit’s the Porefessional which I didn’t even bother using because it felt just like the other two. I also played around with Dr. Brandt’s Pores No more. The thing is, all these Pore Targeting Primers feel the same- they are slippery, and once you work them a bit they become quite thin in texture and borderline greasy-feeling. Having something greasy and slippery underneath my makeup with my skin already being oily was like the opposite of what I want a primer to do. I felt my makeup sliding off my face and that’s never happened to me before.
Considering I had tried these brands that would be considered high-end compared to L’oreal and that they were all specialized products for large pores, I didn’t hold much hope for something from the drugstore. It didn’t even have the word “pore” in it’s name- I mean, really, what good could it possibly do? 😉
Immediately when I felt it between my fingers I noticed that the texture was much thicker and less slippery. The others I tried were beige-tinted which I thought would be good because it would be extra coverage but in reality it made my skin look dull. The light pink hue of the Studio Secrets base doesn’t exactly show up on skin but it does seem to brighten my complexion. It’s not a miracle- it doesn’t erase my pores but then again my pores are really large. I’ve never seem anyone besides my mother with pores as large as mine. It does make them much less noticeable though. It does work better than the higher-end pore targeting primers.
I’ve only tried it with my mineral foundations so far. This is because I notice my pores are more noticeable when I’m wearing mineral makeup as opposed to my liquid foundation. I use MUFE with my liquids and now I have the Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base for my mineral foundations. I think this would look fabulous under liquids as well though so when I try this out I will update! The mineral makeup glided over the base evenly and it looked so nice, smooth and almost airbrushed compared to how it looks on bare skin. I like how it looks on bare skin anyway so this is pretty impressive. I ended up using less of my foundation too. I understand what people talk about now when they say something gave their skin a “soft focus effect.” That’s exactly what this does. If my skin was less red, I can imagine using a foundation with less coverage because of how wonderful the base makes my skin look.
All in all, this was a win. Walgreen’s currently has $2 off in their little booklet that they have at the door. Also, they currently have a Buy one get one 1/2 off on all L’oreal products.
Please look me up on Etsy- I’ve been saving lots of goth-y, dark and unique clothing, accessories and home decor in my favorite shops with the intent of sharing it on here. However, please don’t judge me because of all the food. I haven’t actually ordered any, I’m on a diet so I guess looking at it is like food porn for me. Anyhow, Feel free to look me up: DarkestSunrise.
I have a post coming with swatches that’s taking longer than I expected.
I had the opportunity to attend a launch party at MAC for the Venemous Villains collection. This is the collection inspired by Disney Villains and grouped in four mini-collections for each character. The Villains they chose are Cruella De Vil, Dr. Facilier, The Evil Queen and Maleficent. I love the idea of this collection because it’s fun, it’s a little different and I think it’s well suited to anyone who loves a good dose of drama and darkness!
Now, I have a confession to make. I am actually pretty new to all things MAC. I used to think they were too expensive but I’ve done a lot of experimenting with makeup and I have come to believe that you get what you pay for and I’d rather go for quality over quantity in building my makeup collection. Plus, they aren’t nearly as expensive as many other popular makeup companies. Their lipsticks average only $5 more than Drugstore lipsticks! Would you rather pay $9 for a lipstick that you can’t even open to look at, that may have a funky scent/taste or that doesn’t last long on your lips or pay $14.50 for guaranteed quality, something you can swatch and try on in-store and that you know will be worth it? /endrant.
I spent some time looking over swatches of this collection on Temptalia and Spektra and had pretty much made up my mind on my most-wanted items which turned out to be a good thing because the night of the event the place was mobbed and I wasn’t able to get my paws on the actual pieces. The MAC at Lakeside mall is a very small place- probably the size of our living room! Even though it was invite-only it was too crowded. They had a small area just outside the door roped off with people posing for pictures in front of giant cutouts of the characters and trying on costume pieces after having their makeup done. Inside they were circulating cupcakes, finger foods and champagne. My boyfriend ( who was dragged along last-minute b/c my friend had to work) informed me the cupcakes were extremely yummy. They handed you a list at the door with the collection on it and you could mark down which items you wanted and hand it to the sales gals. I ended up doing that quite shortly after getting there, paying for my stuff and heading out as small, crowded spots are not something I enjoy! I picked up Hot House lipglass ( which I’ve wanted for awhile!) French Quarter greasepaint stick and Vainglorious Eyeshadow. Thanks to the online swatches I knew what I was getting but unfortunately I ended up with one little disppointment anyhow. Vainglorious e/s looks amazing in the pot but loses it’s color and finish when swatched.
This is the swatch to show you Vainglorious. They are left to right- Hot House, French Quarter Greasepaint stick and Vainglorious Eye Shadow, all outside in sunlight just to show the color best but not the finish. Vainglorious came out looking terrible in these swatches and more brown than burgundy however it doesn’t look as nice when swatched as it does in the pan. It’s looks quite different to me and not nearly as pretty as I thought it would be
LtoR- Hot House Lipglass, French Quarter Greasepaint Stick &Vainglorious Eyeshadow. Now, this shows how gorgeous Hot House and French Quarter really look! Aren’t they amazing? I have never used either product in any color before so I was curious and now impressed. The lipglass is sparkly, it’s a nice color that offers the coverage of a lipstick but can be put on lightly for a flattering, Shimmery Raspberry color. It really sticks to lips so I think it would stay on for awhile. The Greasepaint stick would work as a liner, a smoky eye, a cut crease or a base for other shadows. Vainglorious will be good for a smoky eye too, I think. I plan to try it over primer and hope that helps. Even though it’s a little disappointing it’s still unlike any shadow I own so I will find a use for it.
The collection will be available at MAC starting Thursday, Sept. 30th. I recommend checking it out. If you do, please tell me what you got or what caught your eye!
I had never heard of House of Dereon before I spotted their ad in one of the usual beauty mags, but the ads got my attention! It wasn’t the clothing or the shoes, however. It was the model and her tattoos! I was going completely crazy over the ads all the while wondering if the tattoos were real and why the model looked so familiar….*sigh* While researching this post I discovered the model is actually Beyonce and of course, the tatts are not real.I think they might even be the same ones that Urban Decay just released with their holiday collection.
Something about how these are delicate and pretty yet still hardcore…plus I love tattoos that are not just a design, but truly decorate the part of the body on which they are located..like wings on a back, or vine snaking up a torso. I love the jewelry-thin chain garter belt tattoo she has going on, I now want something similar so badly.
You can see for yourself at Dereon’s website- http://www.dereon.com/#/home/
What do you think? Have you ever felt tattoo lust?
If I were on twitter I’d put this there but since I’m not- You can get free shipping from Mac’s website with the code “Chantel” until the 19th. There is often free shipping from Mac but what’s cool IMO is that the new Pro Longwear items come out on the 16th, so you actually have time to check them out in-store first, or if you want to wait to see swatches before you order online, whatever the reason you could use the code to order up some of the new fall items available in the longwear formula sans shipping cost.
I was in Sephora the other day and swatched the KatVonD Painted Love Lipstick in Adora (I mentioned it in the last post) and the swatch stayed on my wrist for 48 hours through a long shower and many hand washings. I would be going back to buy it for sure if I liked the color better, but I’m def. going to swatch the other colors available. If you are a fan of bold colors that are practically bulletproof, do see it for yourself.
Coming up I have a post on a gorgeous and inexpensive red lip color with swatches so stay tuned!
